My thought is that if you have no emcegenry fund, no vacations. You need to build that up 6 months salary (or whatever your comfortable number is based on expenses) first, but after that there's no reason to not go on vacation. If it isn't borrowed money then you may not be better off financially, but you aren't worse off. I have some debt I'm still whittling away at and it keeps going down, but I also put money aside for irregular expenses and trips/ vacations / long weekends with the family. I think most budgets and diets fail because people try to CUT OUT too much and their own nature works against them, and they end up BINDGING. If you set up rules and constantly allow yourself little indulgences you can handle living without without feeling starved.
